Since the British first settled here, they had always yearn for respite from the depressing heat, thus they set sight on the highest peak in Penang i. e. Penang Hill or locally known as Bukit Bendera. They built a railway up the hill and bungalows on the hill for retreat during weekend. Here we can see the legacy of the bungalows left behind by the British. This is coupled with experiencing a colder climate compared to lowland. During the British era the Chinese flourished and thrived. They practiced their religion steadfastly and built many temples that rivalled those in China, if not better! One of the better one is Kek Lok Si, better described as the largest Buddhist's theme park in South East Asia. There is a saying here in Penang - "you have not been to Penang if you have not been to Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si".

Penang, located at north west of Peninsular Malaysia, is a small island but it is compact with interesting and intriguing places. It is the first British Settlement in Malaysia and it flourished and thrived to became the busiest port in the region then. Penang is best known as a melting port for many ethnic groups with the most prominent trade was spices; which the early European paid dearly for these "green gold". The British first planted nutmegs in Penang and then many private planters planted spices like nutmeg, clove, cardamon, chili, and pepper, mostly on the western side of Penang Island. The Hakka Chinese came and planted durian and the Malays planted paddy and fruit trees. When one travels on north and western side of Penang, there are orchards upon orchards that feast the eyes, quite an unique experience merely some 30 to 45 minutes away from George Town. Beside that northern Penang boasted the world smallest National Park and the world largest butterfly park to boot!

All the best attractions Penang has to offers. Ever since the British first settled here, they had always yearn for respite from the depressing heat. There is a saying in Penang - you have not been to Penang if you have not been to Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si. The Chinese built more and more temples which some are grander than those in China. At the same time, Siamese and Burmese built Buddhist temples, the Malay built mosques and the Indians built Hindu temples on gifted land from Queen Victoria while the Europeans built churches. At Kapitan Keling Road, the locals called it Street of Harmony, there are 5 majestic religious buildings within vicinity of each others in a stretch of 500 meter. The British first settled in George Town, a north east enclave on Penang Island, hence started a whole heritage legacy that withstand time for 230 years. Additionally Penang state government also took proactive measure to have street arts drawn in this heritage area to draw in more tourists into its already heritage rich areas.
